KWL - What is it? How does it apply as an Active Learning strategy?

  • KWL - a graphic organizer used to identify what students Know, what they Want to know, and what they Learned.

  • Developed by Donna Ogle in 1986 as an active reading strategy. (Ogle, D.M. (1986). K-W-L: A teaching model that develops active reading of expository text. Reading Teacher, 39, 564-570).

  • Can be applied for any type of learning where the goal is to activate prior knowledge (Know), engage in inquiry based learning (Want to Know) and participate in formative assessment and/or metacognitive learning (Learned)

    • KWL forms can be downloaded from many online resources including Eduplace, ReadingQuest, Scholastic, and more.

    • They can also be easily created with any word processor, graphic software, or simply by drawing the frame on paper.

    • Online generators such as the one on Teachnology can help you develop your own.

  • KWL graphic organizers can also be adapted in many ways to apply to specific purposes, audiences, content areas, etc.

    • KWHL includes How students will find out what they want to learn.

    • KWLH includes How students can learn more as follow up activities.

  • KWLs need not be limited to text responses. Allow the students learning style to guide the way they engage with the organizer (drawing, pictures, multimedia, etc.), depending on the individual's learning style and needs.


KWL - Why enhance it with technology?

  • KWL activities enhanced with online tools allow students to collaborate over space and time and ease the implementation of non-text based application.
